Senior Platform Engineer

SMG is looking for a Senior Platform Engineer to design, support, and improve the core infrastructure that keeps our platform reliable, secure, performant, and recoverable. This role works across cloud, network, identity, messaging, virtualization, and security environments, partnering with IT and security teams to resolve complex incidents, improve platform standards, automate repeatable work, and strengthen engineering practices across the team.

What we’re looking for
SMG is looking for a Senior Platform Engineer to design, support, and improve the core infrastructure that keeps our platform reliable, secure, performant, and recoverable. This role works across cloud, network, identity, messaging, virtualization, and security environments, partnering with IT and security teams to resolve complex incidents, improve platform standards, automate repeatable work, and strengthen engineering practices across the team.
What you’ll do
- Lead and coordinate responses to complex infrastructure, identity, networking, security, and cloud incidents to restore service, reduce risk, and drive long-term corrective actions.
- Provide senior-level technical guidance and escalation support across identity, messaging, cloud, virtualization, and security platforms to improve issue resolution and team effectiveness.
- Optimize the performance, reliability, and cost efficiency of cloud services and on-premises infrastructure.
- Collaborate with security and IT partners to strengthen disaster recovery, backup, and recoverability practices that support business continuity.
- Administer and improve enterprise network and security technologies, including Azure networking, Cisco ASA/ISE, Cisco Umbrella, and F5 load balancing, to enable secure and resilient connectivity.
- Automate repeatable administration and operational tasks using scripting and engineering best practices to improve efficiency, consistency, and accuracy.
- Lead or support application and infrastructure migrations to cloud environments while minimizing operational disruption and preserving service continuity.
- Advance engineering enablement and site reliability practices by building reusable platform capabilities, improving observability and operational standards, reducing toil, and strengthening service resilience.
- Within 30 days, build working knowledge of SMG’s platform infrastructure, operational standards, key dependencies, and incident-response practices across cloud, network, identity, messaging, virtualization, and security environments.
- Within 60 days, contribute independently to complex incident response and platform improvement work, identify opportunities to automate repeatable administration, and strengthen documentation, monitoring, or recoverability practices.
- Within 90 days, own senior-level platform engineering work across assigned environments, deliver meaningful reliability, automation, or resilience improvement, and provide technical guidance that strengthens engineering consistency across the team.

What you’ll bring
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience.
- 5+ years of experience in platform engineering, cloud infrastructure, DevOps, network engineering, or related technical roles supporting production environments.
- Experience designing, operating, and improving cloud and hybrid infrastructure platforms in enterprise or SaaS environments.
- Advanced knowledge of networking protocols and enterprise networking/security practices across data center and cloud environments, including Azure, AWS, or GCP architectures and operational frameworks.
- Proficiency with virtualization technologies; automation and scripting using PowerShell, Bash, Python, or similar languages; and monitoring, performance analysis, and troubleshooting of distributed infrastructure systems.
