Full job details
Level is a learning technology company dedicated to helping students build real academic and life skills with confidence and joy. We combine proven curriculum principles with world class interactive design to make meaningful practice something students want to come back to, not something they struggle through.
We support what teachers, schools, and parents are already doing by increasing student engagement with high quality, standards aligned practice that reinforces classroom learning. That’s why we’re building:
For students: Rewarding and motivating learning experiences that meet students where they are to build real academic proficiency.
For educators: Tools that fit naturally into instruction and help students stay engaged while reducing teacher workload.
For parents: Activities that help your kid catch up or get ahead, build confidence, and minimize homework battles, whether learning at school or at home.
We are committed to helping every person maximize their potential and live a life of meaning. It’s a difficult problem that requires brilliant people and tremendous effort over time.
Level is looking for a systems-oriented engine engineer to help build and evolve our robust technology platform supporting a broad range of devices, including web, desktop, Chromebooks, iPads, and mobile. We are building our own technology stack below the gameplay layer, and we are looking for engineers who are comfortable working in engine internals, modifying engine source, and making architectural decisions that affect the entire platform. The ideal candidate has technical breadth across engine and platform systems combined with the depth to solve unfamiliar, low-level problems, and can operate with significant autonomy in a high-bar engineering culture that is increasingly leaning into AI-assisted development.
What You Will Do:
Work across engine architecture, runtime systems, memory management, multithreading/concurrency, asset loading and streaming, serialization, and build systems
Modify and extend our forked Godot engine source to meet product and platform needs
Identify and resolve architectural and performance issues at the engine level
Build reusable engine systems and tooling, rather than one-off features, that improve the productivity of gameplay engineers and content creators
Solve cross-platform compatibility issues across web, desktop, Chromebooks, iPads, and mobile
Profile and optimize for CPU, memory, and general runtime performance
Navigate and improve a large, evolving, and sometimes unfamiliar codebase
Contribute to engineering practices, mentor other engineers, and act as a go-to resource for engine/platform systems
Actively experiment with and adopt AI-assisted development tools to improve engineering workflows
Qualifications
Need to Have:
Strong professional C++ experience
7+ years of experience working on game engines, real-time systems, runtime infrastructure, platform technology, or other low-level systems
Direct experience working with and modifying engine source code
Experience shipping games or other real-time software products
Strong debugging and profiling skills
Solid understanding of memory, CPU performance, threading, data layout, and systems-level constraints
Experience solving cross-platform issues
Demonstrated ability to reason about architecture, not just implement tickets
Experience building reusable systems rather than only isolated features
Senior or Staff-level technical caliber, with signals such as owning major systems, setting architecture, or leading technical decisions (formal people management not required)
Nice to Have:
Experience with Godot specifically (core contribution, engine/module development, or maintaining a fork)
Background in Unreal Engine source development, proprietary engine teams, console/platform teams, or cross-platform porting
Experience with rendering-adjacent systems, engine tooling, editor workflows, or CI/CD and build pipelines
Experience with platform abstraction layers and input/device support across varied hardware
Curiosity about and hands-on experimentation with AI-assisted development tools
